October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month

October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month, an annual recognition of the impact of domestic violence on individual survivors and entire communities.

This year’s theme, #Every1KnowsSome1, highlights the pervasiveness of domestic violence. According to the National Network to End Domestic Violence (NNEDV), one in three women, one in four men, and nearly half of all members of the LGBTQ+ community will experience domestic violence in their lifetime.

Domestic violence impacts all survivors differently. Some survivors may face adverse barriers to accessing support and achieving safety and stability due to their race, citizenship status, age, disability, language skills, geographic location, and other experiences of marginalization.

While all survivors experience domestic violence differently, there is one universal truth: each survivor is the expert in their own journey to safety and stability.

While organizations around the country are united this month to shine a light on the #Every1KnowsSome1 campaign, survivors, advocates, organizations, and coalitions work around the clock (literally - with 24/7 hotlines available at the local and national level) throughout the year to counteract the impact of domestic violence. Individuals and groups across the country collaborate every day to connect survivors to housing, legal support, mental health resources, and other forms of support while also advocating for more equitable and accessible communities.

Wondering how you can support these efforts?
