HarborCOV Partners with Chelsea Community, State to Offer Vigil to Remember Margarita Morehead and Raise Awareness About Domestic Violence

HarborCOV, the local domestic violence program serving the Chelsea, Revere, East Boston, Winthrop, and Charlestown communities, mourns the loss of Margarita Morehead, a community member who died from alleged domestic violence homicide in Chelsea on Monday, May 8th. HarborCOV extends its sincerest condolences to Morehead’s loved ones and all who are impacted by this tragedy.

This is the second domestic violence homicide in Chelsea in less than two years.

“Domestic violence is everyone’s business. It does not discriminate based on race, socioeconomic status, language, sexual orientation, or gender identity or expression. We must realize that this type of violence affects all of us, and we need to take a stand to support and educate our friends, neighbors, and families. Domestic violence is our business,” said Kourou Pich, Chief Executive Officer of HarborCOV.

In partnership with La Colaborativa, the City of Chelsea, the Chelsea Police Department, the Suffolk County DA, and Jane Doe Inc., HarborCOV will host a community vigil in Chelsea on Friday, May 12th at 10AM at Chelsea City Hall to honor the life of Morehead and raise awareness about the lethality of domestic violence. Please refer to www.harborcov.org for more information about the vigil.

HarborCOV encourages anyone who is experiencing domestic violence, or who wonders if they are being abused, to reach out for support. As many as 1 in 3 women and 1 in 4 men have been victims of physical violence by an intimate partner within their lifetime, and even more individuals experience emotional, financial, and sexual abuse, and more.

A call to HarborCOV’s hotline can be a first step toward safety. All calls are free, anonymous, and confidential.  Our multilingual, multicultural staff will connect you to a community of support – not to judge you or the person you love, but to listen, to help you find options that make sense to you, and to support your right to be safe in your life.

Bystanders have the ability to save lives. It is free and easy to stand up against domestic violence in the community. If you witness or overhear a domestic violence incident, immediately call 911. If you hear or see something, say something – it could save someone’s life.
